The magnetic field is the area around a magnet where the forces can be detected.

The students of 2nd ESO have just checked the existence of the magnetic field doing this experiment in class: a magnet has been placed under a piece of paper. Then, iron filings have been added to the paper, little by little. The result, as shown in the photo, is that the filings arrange themselves around the magnet in lines, called field lines, that connect the north pole with the south pole of the magnet.
